Accompanied by his wife Margaret, their children Elsa and John, his sister Claire, and Claire's daughter Mary Abel, James embarked on a wagon train journey from Fort Worth, Texas. However, the expedition was fraught with misfortune. In the wake of Elsa's death on the trail, John and the remaining family members opted to establish their home in Montana, which would eventually become the renowned Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.
